Antenatal care, or prenatal care, is scheduled during pregnancy to monitor the health and growth of your baby. This is also a fantastic opportunity to ask any questions you have about your pregnancy, such as what's happening during each trimester, your pregnancy symptoms, and the eventual birth. As soon as you find out you're pregnant, you should schedule your first antenatal appointment.

During this process, Dr Thomas will examine your overall health, assess possible risks and treat conditions that could affect you or your baby. She may prescribe vitamin supplements, hypertension medication and HIV drugs to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

If this is your first pregnancy and you're not having any complications, you'll probably have 8 to 10 appointments. If this isn't your first pregnancy, you'll likely have 7-9 appointments if your last pregnancy was not high-risk.

Dr Thomas may need to expand your appointment schedule to accommodate certain complications, and you may require additional tests and scans.
